Antigone Final draft
In Antigone by Sophocles,
there are two characters. Antigone and Creon are two characters that are very
different from one another, but share some traits. This makes both of them
disagree with each other a lot.
Loyalty to family is important. In (2.10) “And then
she brought more dust and sprinkled wine three times for her brothers ghost.”
Antigone shows the honor and loyalty she has for her brother’s death. She
sprinkles wine on his grave to show the respect she has for him. Not only is
she loyal to her family, but also to the gods. In (2.65-67) she states that
should always over power man. She says that the law of gods should over power
those laws of man. On the other hand Creon disagrees with that statement of
Antigone. He believes that the law of man should come first. Creon is loyal to
the state. He is so loyal to the state that he put the state before his family.
This leads to the death of all of them.
Pride can be a good thing, but can also be bad.
Antigone has a lot of pride. She shows example throughout the story, for
example. In (2.59) Antigone says “I do. I deny nothing.” This shows you that
she does not care if everyone knows what she did because she is proud for it.
In (2.113-114) she states that she praises and honors for what she did, and
that all men should praise her. That alone tells you how much of pride she has.
Creon is also prideful. In (2.146, 150) he says “Your voice distresses me.” And
“You talk too much.” This shows how prideful Creon is. It tells you that he
doesn’t care what he says to others because he know that they will not do
anything about it.
Antigone and Creon are different overall, but also
have some of the same traits like pride. Antigone deserved her death because
she knew the consequence to her actions, and she refused to pay attention to
them. Creon also deserved to die because he refused to follow the prophecy.
Once he realized that he needed to change it was too late and the outcome of
that was his death.
